5/21/2023 0 Comments Joker comic azzarelloI just want to know what do you think about this perspective. Don't get upset, cuz being DC fans doesn't mean we all have to like every DC product. Anyway, I'm sure some of you will understand what I mean, and some of you will get upset. Maybe it works better with villains like Victor Zsasz. Azzarello thinks that the nonsense violence makes the Joker more attractive, but that's not the main thing that we love from the Joker. A rapist Joker is unnecessary and Azzarello's novel exaggerates with its baseless violence. He just tries to have fun creating chaos. The Joker should never be related to money or lust. The Joker is more than just trying to impress the reader with nonsense brutality like when he skinned one of his henchmen. I know that the Joker has evolved through time during the 20th century, but, by now, it shouldn't evolve anymore, it has already developed a solid personality that shouldn't change. I think that this version of the Joker is okay when it doesn't mean changing the character entirely, and that's what Azzarello did in some way. Other people prefer a version of the Joker who is barely laughing and is only trying to be more brutal. I know that there are a lot of versions of the Joker, and I always prefered a balance between a violent criminal and a clown that is always trying to have fun and make jokes. I considered it an interesting story, but I hated what Azzarello did to the Joker. 1 day ago &0183 &32 For decades Batman and Joker have fought one another, with the Clown Prince of Crime constantly escaping because the Dark Knight refuses to kill him, but recently Batman was finally given permission to kill Joker by the one person he might listen to: himself. I just read Joker by Azzarello and Bermejo. For something so popular, it may come as a surprise that Remarque’s novel was ever banned.Īlthough the book was published more than a decade after the armistice, the lingering weight of World War I was still heavy on the minds of readers. Within the first eighteen months in print, the novel had been copied in twenty-two different languages and sold 2.5 million copies. In the United States, the English translation titled, All Quiet on the Western Front, became a best-selling work of fiction. In January of the following year, it was released as a book and saw immediate success. ― Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western FrontĮrich Maria Remarque’s novel Im Westen nichts Neues was first published in serial form in the Vossische Zeitung magazine from November to December, 1928. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony - Forgive me, comrade how could you be my enemy?” I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. “But now, for the first time, I see you are a man like me. The roomy Queen Anne he now owns is little more than a clapboard shell on a crumbling brick foundation, missing windows, heat, water, electricity, and a functional roof.Ī $500 House in Detroit is Philp's raw and earnest account of rebuilding everything but the frame of his house, nail by nail and room by room. Arriving with no job, no friends, and no money, Philp buys a ramshackle house for five hundred dollars in the east side neighborhood known as Poletown. He sets his sights on Detroit, the failed metropolis of abandoned buildings, widespread poverty, and rampant crime. A young college grad buys a house in Detroit for $500 and attempts to restore it-and his new neighborhood-to its original glory in this "deeply felt, sharply observed personal quest to create meaning and community out of the fallen.A standout" ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review).ĭrew Philp, an idealistic college student from a working-class Michigan family, decides to live where he can make a difference. Amid the secrecy, lies, and threats, the two are drawn together and must learn to trust each other against their common enemies. The two head off the Paris together, both aware the other isn’t who they say they are (a British governess and a Parisian peddler). It is at the ruins of the de Fleurignac chateau that she is found by William Doyle, a British spy in search of her father. When the book opens, though, her network across Normandy is being revealed to the authorities she barely escapes arrest herself, and her home burned to the ground. Margeurite de Fleurignac is both the daughter of a marquis in France at the height of the Reign of Terror and the head of La Flèche, a group of counter-revolutionaries helping future victims of the guillotine escape. Joanna Bourne’s latest novel has everything I love about romance: A strong relationship, complex characters, and effortless writing. Plodding through forgettable spy novels (and historicals in general) sometimes makes me forget what a truly great book looks like – and then I read one like The Forbidden Rose. 5/21/2023 0 Comments How to live bakewellHe began the Essays a couple of years later, around 1572, and, even then, he wrote other chapters before coming to the one about losing consciousness. The connection is not a simple one: he did not sit up in bed and immediately start writing about the accident. The first scene could have happened to anyone the second to any sensitive, educated young man of the Renaissance. Finally, there is Montaigne a few years later, sitting down to write about it – and about a multitude of other things. Then comes Montaigne in the weeks and months that followed, reflecting on the experience and trying to reconcile it with his philosophical reading. First, there is Montaigne lying on the ground, clawing at his stomach while experiencing euphoria. The riding accident, which so altered Montaigne’s perspective, lasted only a few moments in itself, but one can unfold it into three parts and spread it over several years. He aspires to a political career and is slowly and carefully making a name for himself in the right circles, even though he is well aware that he doesn’t quite fit in with those he would join in Parliament. Like Hugo, he is ambitious, fiercely intelligent, tenacious, and not above getting his hands dirty when something unpleasant needs to be done. Oliver bears many similarities to Hugo who, although not his biological father, is his father in every way that matters. Oliver Marshall, the hero of The Heiress Effect is their son, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting his story since I read the prequel in December. Ms Milan’s novella The Governess Affair, which is the prequel to this series, was one of my favourite books from late 2012, and I’ve listed Hugo and Serena from that story as one of my favourite couples on my reviewer profile here at AAR. 5/20/2023 0 Comments Billion dollar whale by tom wrightIt led to the complete damage worth billions. A year later, after the huge crash of 2008, a 28-year-old with no real business experienced pulled off the largest theft of the century. The next thing that occurred was really audacious it hardly looks credible. Using his connection with politicians, fixers and sheiks, he got himself into the center of a cash-rich venture apparently created to improve the lives of regular Malays. He faked connections at the Pennsylvanian institution and that connection steered him into a mysterious world of oil money, poorly managed state investment funds and high-wire financial transactions.
